Air conditioning heating and cooling
Air conditioning or climate control what’s the difference?
Simply put air conditioning units traditionally were just cooling units that blast out cold air into a room. It’s a bit like the models on older cars where it’s nice to be cool on a hot day but you don’t really have a lot of control over the ambient temperature inside. They tend to be on or off and set to a speed of fan but at an unknown temperature.
Climate control is a heating and cooling device. You set the temperature that you require and will maintain that temperature inside the conservatory. This includes heating the conservatory on cooler days.
Most companies in the UK still refer to their units as air conditioning units so make sure you read the small print and it has heater as well as a cooling.
Tips make sure that the unit is designed for the UK there were some cases in the UK where the units had a frost stat on them. When it got cold and the unit iced up it switched itself into reverse and sucked all the warm air out of the conservatory in an attempt to defrost itself
What can I expect from my air conditioning system?
Cooling
Most air conditioners offer digital control of the temperature inside the conservatory. This means that you can set the unit. Once cool the unit will click on and off to remain at the correct temperature that you feel is best. The right unit set up correctly will literally disappear in to the back ground leaving you to enjoy your conservatory. What could be better than sitting on a hot summer’s day enjoying an ice cold drink in your freshly cooled conservatory?
Heating
Probably the most over looked design feature of a conservatory. Why would I need to heat my conservatory you may be asking? Trust us you will. There are a lot of energy saving design features that you can add to your conservatory such as K glass and argon filled glass. But that additional top up of heat is always required when the sun goes down. Modern climate control units usually come with heating included. If you also look for the units that are digital and have a timer unit.
Nice on a Sunday morning to come down to warm conservatory to read the papers.
Cleaning
What a bonus, most air conditioning create a clean and healthy environment. They do this by being equipped with filters that extract dust from the air. Some units even allow you increase the filtration levels for those who suffer from hay fever to remove the pollen.
Dehumidifying
In cooling mode an air conditioning unit dehumidifies the air creating a feeling of wellbeing.
Conservatory Air conditioning units - the different types
Split systems
These are the most recent addition to the conservatory market. As the main unit is usually 4 mts away the internal unit is always sleek and modern in design. These units are in two parts the control unit and the compressor. The control unit is fixed to the wall inside the conservatory and is fed by a hose from the main compressor unit that is placed outside. This means that these units are exceptionally quiet and are suitable for full height conservatories where you don’t have a dwarf wall to fit the unit through. These units cannot be fitted low on a dwarf wall and are usually fitted high on the back wall of the conservatory. This is due to the required position of the thermostat.
The through the wall system
This system is specifically designed for the conservatory market. The unit fits straight through the dwarf wall. It’s the quickest and easiest to fit as long as you ask you base supplier or builder to leave the correct size hole in the wall. Most are single phase so once fitted you just plug them in and away you go. These units come in a variety of cooling capacities so that they can cope with even the largest of conservatories. And for those of you with large conservatories just add an extra one. Make sure you have some space on the outside wall as the units always stick out into the garden.
Stand alone or portable.
The flexible option. If you want to utilise your air conditioning / heating unit around the home the stand alone or portable option is for you. It offers all the features of the wall fixed units. Okay it wont be as slim and fitted as the through wall units but it wont look out of place in any conservatory.
Local conservatory tip always look for branded compressors such as Sanyo or Toshiba these are the heart of the air conditioner so don’t cut corners as a failure later could mean you replacing the unit earlier than intended
